Man sentenced to jail after impersonating as police with AI-created ID during robbery in South Korea

On May 27, 2026, a man in 30s rang the doorbell of a woman living alone in Jeju City, South Korea. He showed her a photo of a police ID that he created with AI and said he had come to carry out a search, where he took cash and jewellery worth about 3 million won (value of CAD$3000). The victim reported the incident 17 hours later and the police arrested the suspect the next day. On September 10, the Jeju District Court sentenced the accused to two years in prison in addition to other charges.

Claim check The incident focuses on a police ID. No source names the AI tool used and none of the reported charges weigh on how the picture was created.

Incident

In the early morning on May 27, 2026, a man in 30s rang the doorbell of a house in Jeju City, South Korea where a woman resided alone. He told her he was a police officer who had come to carry out a search and displayed a picture of a police officer’s ID. According to the charges, the suspect made her go into the bathroom while stealing cash and jewellery worth about 3 million won (roughly CAD$3,000). Police statement claims that he knew she lived alone and targeted.

She reported it to police about 17 hours later to the local authorities, where he was arrested the next morning. Police described the case as theft and said they would seek a detention warrant. By June 10 2026, the prosecutors charged the suspect of robbery and was indicted him in custody. He was also charged with stealing 1 million won (CAD$1000) in cash from another home.

On September 10 2026, the Jeju District Court sentenced him to two years in prison, suspended for four years with 80 hours of community service and ordered the items stolen to be returned back to the victim. The court claims that he had planned the crimes, aimed at his victims’ vulnerabilities and damaged public trust in police officers. Given his method and its social impact, his criminality was not lightly taken. The court suspended the sentence because he admitted the charges and showed remorse, had settled with both victims and had no previous criminal record.

The AI claim

Several entries in Unio Analytics make AI claim on an official statement, among the others are the Chatham County, Toronto and Montreal cases. This one stands on firmer ground. Jeju Sori, quoting the charged facts and Aju Business Daily citing the indictment report that the accused presented a police officer’s ID made or forged with AI. Aju and Issue Valley describe it as a photo and Issue Valley adds that the suspect displayed the ID on his phone. As reported, the claim sits in a charging document.

No reported articles names the tool, states how the image was made nor describes what the ID looked like. One headline calls it ‘undetectable’; the picture did not have to look 100% authentic to pass ordinary person’s eye.

Issue Valley lists the charges as robbery, theft and impersonating a public official; other outlets say robbery and other charges. None of those depends on how the picture was made. The court’s reported reasons refer to his method, but no report quotes the court on the AI element itself.

The charge that is missing

From the first report, the police described the ID as forged with AI. No report of the charges lists forgery.

Korea’s Supreme Court has held that a computer image file made by scanning a forged identity card is not itself a “document” under the offence of forging an official document (2007Do7480). If the ID existed only as an image, as the report of a photo on a phone suggests, that ruling may be why no forgery count appears.

A generated ID that is never printed would fall outside the forgery offence and the law would reach the conduct only through what the picture was used for. Impersonating a public official is an offence when the impersonator exercises official authority (Criminal Act, Article 118).

From theft to robbery

On the day of the arrest, police described the case as theft. However, in June the charge was changed to robbery and it stayed through the indictment and the sentence. The trial coverage covers the detail that fits the heavier charge: he had the victim go into the bathroom so she could not resist.

The sentence

The Sentencing Commission’s current guideline for ordinary robbery runs from 18 months to three years in its mitigated range and from two to four years in its basic range. Two years falls inside both. Korean law allows a prison sentence to be suspended only when it is three years or less and between one and five years (Criminal Act, Article 62).

The Korean law treats the incident where the individual intrudes a property at night as special robbery, a separate and heavier type with ranges starting at 30 months. The reports name the charge here as robbery, not special robbery, although the offence happened inside a home at about 1:50 AM.

A note on naming

Korean reports identify him only as a man in his 30s and Unio Analytics could not locate court document or agency release that names the individual.

Open

The indictment and the judgment This record has read neither. Everything about the court stage comes from reports of the sentencing and the indictment’s wording comes from news accounts of it.

Appeal No report states whether either side appealed or what prosecutors asked for.

The tool No source names the AI tool/software or states how the image was generated.

The previous theft No source indicates whether the accused used the fake ID for a theft of 1 million won. Issue Valley’s opening line says he deceived victims but the report ties the ID only to the Jeju robbery.

No police release Jeju police did not make official statement pertaining to this incident. All the detail of the incident came from news reports.
