The sheriff's office states that more than 50,000 images and videos were found in online accounts.

Numbers check The 50,000 figure covers material found in online accounts. The 13 counts rest on eight videos and five images and detectives have not yet established whether real children were used.

Scope

This record covers category D evaluating detection, statute, charge and enforcement. The conduct is described below.

How the incident surfaced

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children team received information from NCMEC that a device in Lake County was being used to create AI-generated child sexual abuse material. Detectives traced the device to a home in Antioch. The Sheriff’s Office, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and the Illinois Attorney General’s Office executed a search warrant on October 08, 2026 where numerous electronic devices were seized for forensic analysis.

The release from the authorities does not state who reported the incident to NCMEC. The Lake and McHenry County Scanner, reporting from the first court appearance on October 09, 2026 states ten CyberTips dating back to June 2025 which outlined the use of AI tools from Facebook and xAI. Based on the gap between the dates, more than a year passed between the first tip and the police search warrant. No sources confirm which companies filed the tips or why it took so long.

The charges

The State’s Attorney’s Office approved 13 counts of obscene depiction of a purported child, each a Class 2 felony, and says more charges are anticipated. According to the Scanner, the 13 counts cover eight videos found in online accounts and five images recovered by analysts. Prosecutors filed a petition to detain Hansen for pending trial. The Scanner reports that Judge Michael Nerheim ordered Hansen held until a detention hearing set for October 09 2026. No other record has found the outcome of the hearing.

The Illinois statute

Illinois built Section 11-20.4 of the Criminal Code to combat any forged material that does not depict a real child under the age 18. The statute covers any computer-generated images and video of underaged kids. It took effect on January 01, 2025 under Public Act 103-825.

In the Boulder County case, the images were altered photographs of real children, a general child-exploitation statute applied. In this incident, however, prosecutors have not yet shown that a real child was used.

50,000 images & videos

The sheriff’s office linked Hansen to more than 50,000 images and videos in online accounts and hundreds more were found at the home during the search warrant. So far, Hansen has been charged with 13 items. Detectives say they are still working to determine whether real children were used.

Open

Detention The final ruling from the October 09 2026 detention hearing has not been found online and no next court date has been published.

Felony class The statute sets Class 3 for a first offence of receiving or accessing the material and Class 1 for possessing it with intent to disseminate. Class 2 applies to a second or subsequent receiving offence. The sheriff’s office states each count is Class 2; either the statute has been amended since the version located or the charging basis differs from what the release suggests.

Who reported NCMEC is the only source named by an agency. Whether the AI providers filed the CyberTips themselves or whether their safeguards refused any requests is not on the record.

Real children Whether any real child was used to create images and/or videos is open question that could change the charges.
